TENZING: The Mount Everest Movie Coming to Apple TV+
A new movie TENZING is being made about one of the most famous mountain climbing stories in history.

The film tells the true story of Sherpa Legend Tenzing Norgay and his historic climb to the top of Mount Everest in 1953.
What the Movie is About
TENZING focuses on the incredible journey of Tenzing Norgay, a Sherpa guide who became the first person to reach the summit of Mount Everest alongside New Zealand climber Sir Edmund Hillary. The story takes place in 1953 during a British expedition to conquer the world’s tallest mountain.

The movie shows how Tenzing and Hillary were both considered outsiders on the British expedition team. Despite facing enormous challenges, dangerous weather, and difficult politics, they worked together to achieve what many thought was impossible.
The film highlights Tenzing’s warm personality, his sense of humor, and his deep respect for Mount Everest, which the Sherpa people call Chomolungma (meaning “Mother Goddess of the mountain”). After six previous failed attempts by other climbers, Tenzing risked everything for one final try to reach the top.
The Cast
Genden Phuntsok plays the lead role of Tenzing Norgay. He’s a Chinese actor of Tibetan descent, best known for his work in films like Jinpa and Wind.
Tom Hiddleston plays Sir Edmund Hillary, the New Zealand mountaineer who climbed Everest alongside Tenzing.

Willem Dafoe takes on the role of Colonel John Hunt, who led the British Everest expedition.
Caitríona Balfe plays Jill Henderson, described as a friend of Tenzing who helped organize expeditions up Mount Everest.
Thinley Lhamo plays Dawa, Tenzing’s wife. She has appeared in films including Shambala, Hari, and Naakaa.
Behind the Scenes
The movie is directed by Jennifer Peedom, who previously made a documentary called Sherpa about the Sherpa climbing community. She has a close relationship with Tenzing’s family and the Sherpa people.
The script was written by Luke Davies, who was nominated for an Academy Award for his work on the movie Lion.
The film is being produced by See-Saw Films and will be released on Apple TV+ worldwide.
Production Details
Filming began in May 2025 in Nepal, including locations in Kathmandu and the Everest region. The production is expected to last about a month.
Interestingly, Tenzing Norgay’s own son, Norbu Tenzing, is working as an executive producer on the film, helping to ensure the story is told authentically.
From Netflix to Apple
Originally, TENZING was set to be made by Netflix, but Apple TV+ took over the project and made it one of their original films.
The movie represents an important story about determination, friendship, and respect for nature, told through the eyes of a Sherpa guide whose achievement changed mountaineering history forever.
