Update on Nirmal “Nimsdai” Purja: GPS Signal Shows Possible Signs of Life After Broad Peak Avalanche
A new update has brought a ray of hope in the search for legendary Nepali mountaineer Nirmal “Nimsdai” Purja following the Broad Peak avalanche.
According to information shared by his partner and Elite Exped director Mingma David Sherpa, Nims Purja’s Garmin satellite tracker showed a signal update at 06:18 AM, indicating possible movement. Mingma David said the data suggests that Nims may be alive, conscious, and waiting for rescue.
The latest GPS data shows Purja’s location at approximately 5,878.67 metres, with the tracker indicating no significant movement and the device battery now showing low. While the signal provides hope, experts caution that GPS fluctuations and tracking errors are common in extreme high-altitude environments, and the data must be interpreted carefully.
The tracker history also highlights the extreme force of the avalanche, showing that Purja was carried hundreds of metres down the mountain before the signal stabilized at its current location.
Rescue teams, including elite Pakistani climbers and supporting Nepali and Shimshali climbers, continue efforts to reach the missing climbers on Broad Peak under extremely challenging conditions.
