Broad Peak Rescue Update: Search Operation Resumes Today as Nepali Team Arrives in Skardu
The search and recovery operation on Broad Peak (8,047 m) is expected to resume today after being suspended yesterday because of severe weather.
According to yesterday’s official press release from the Commissioner Baltistan’s Office, three climbers have been officially recovered Nadhira Ahmed Abdullah Al Harthy (Oman), Pur Bahadur Gurung “Yukta” (Nepal), and Sarah Mallory Geis (United States). Authorities also reported spotting several additional bodies by drone, but stressed that they cannot be officially identified until rescue teams reach them on the mountain.
Today’s operation will build on the work already underway by Pakistani rescuers led by Sirbaz Khan, who remain at Broad Peak Base Camp.
A new three-member support team from Nepal has also arrived in Skardu to assist the ongoing operation. The team includes Mingma David Sherpa, co-founder of Elite Exped and one of Nirmal “Nims Dai” Purja’s closest climbing partners, along with experienced high-altitude Sherpas and a pilot with extensive Himalayan rescue flying experience. Their role is to support the search and recovery efforts in coordination with Pakistani authorities.
The rescue mission continues under extremely difficult conditions, with unstable snow, avalanche danger, high altitude, and rapidly changing weather making access to the avalanche site both dangerous and time-consuming.
As of this morning, authorities have officially confirmed only the recovery of three climbers. The status of the remaining missing climbers, including Nirmal “Nims Dai” Purja, Nima Sherpa, Nawang Thindu Sherpa, Gyalu Sherpa, Wang Zhong, Sohail Sakhi, and Kili Pemba Sherpa, has not yet been officially updated.
