Pasang Lhamu Sherpa: First Nepali Female Everest Climber

Pasang Lhamu Sherpa, born on December 10, 1961, in Lukla, Nepal, emerged as a legendary figure in the world of mountaineering. Despite facing societal norms and cultural constraints, she defied all odds to etch her name in history as the first Nepali woman to summit the mighty Mount Everest.

Raised in a Sherpa family of mountaineers in the Solukhumbu district, Pasang Lhamu did not receive formal education like her brothers. Yet, her spirit was indomitable, and she embarked on her mountaineering journey at a young age.

At just 17 years old, Pasang Lhamu rejected an arranged marriage and fled her native village to pursue her dreams in Kathmandu. There, she married Lhakpa Sonam Sherpa and co-founded Thamserku Trekking, a venture that paved the way for her ambitious climbs.

Her mountaineering prowess began to shine when she became the first Nepali woman to summit Mount Blanc in 1990. This remarkable achievement marked the beginning of a series of triumphs that would redefine the possibilities for women in mountaineering.

Despite facing setbacks, including three failed attempts to summit Everest, Pasang Lhamu’s resolve only grew stronger. Her determination reached new heights when she organized the Nepali Woman’s Everest Expedition in 1993, leading a team of 10 climbers, including herself and two other women.

On April 22, 1993, Pasang Lhamu and her teammates reached the summit of Mount Everest via the Southeast Ridge route, marking a historic moment for Nepali mountaineering. However, tragedy struck on their descent as they encountered a fierce storm that claimed the life of Pasang Lhamu’s husband, Sonam Tshering Sherpa.

Despite the adversities, Pasang Lhamu’s spirit remained unbroken. Her unwavering courage and determination epitomized the essence of mountaineering. Her legacy continues to inspire mountaineers worldwide, and her contributions to the sport are commemorated through various honors and accolades.
