Lakpa Dendi Sherpa: The Himalayan Maverick
From humble porter to world record holder, Lakpa Dendi Sherpa’s story represents the spirit of Nepal’s legendary mountain people. Born in Solukhumbu, in the shadow of the world’s tallest peaks.

Lakpa’s journey to mountaineering fame began with the most modest of roles – carrying gear for others who dreamed of climbing the Himalayas.
Few could have predicted that this young man would one day not only stand atop Mount Everest multiple times but would shatter records that seemed impossible.
Lakpa’s most remarkable achievement came in 2018 when he summited Everest three times in just 10 days and 30 minutes, a feat that earned him a Guinness World Record and international recognition.
“The Sherpas, driven by unwavering commitment, carry the weight of responsibility in the most unforgiving regions of the earth, risking their lives to ensure the safety and success of others,”
Lakpa has said, reflecting on the role of his community in mountaineering history.

His accomplishments stretch far beyond this single record. To date, Lakpa has climbed Everest 11 times and has made multiple ascents of other formidable 8,000-meter peaks, including K2 (twice), Dhaulagiri (three times), Manaslu (three times), Lhotse (three times), as well as successful climbs of Annapurna I, Kanchenjunga, Makalu, and Nanga Parbat. In another display of extraordinary endurance, he climbed both Everest and K2 within just 59 days.
In all, Lakpa has stood on the summits of 8,000-meter peaks an incredible 33 times, a evidence to his exceptional skill, determination, and physical capability at extreme altitudes.
April 2024 marked another milestone in Lakpa’s remarkable journey when his autobiography, “Himalayan Maverick,” was launched at Everest Base Camp. The book chronicles his rise from porter to world-renowned mountaineer and aims to highlight the often-overlooked contributions of Sherpa climbers to Himalayan mountaineering.
Recently recognized with the Everest Tourism Award 2025 for Adventure Tourism Excellence in Mountaineering, Lakpa expressed his gratitude and commitment to his homeland.
“As someone deeply connected to the mountains, I see this as a responsibility to do even more to promote Nepal’s tourism sector. From showcasing our breathtaking landscapes to preserving our rich culture and heritage, I am committed to encouraging sustainable tourism, supporting local communities, and sharing the spirit of the Himalayas with the world.”
Lakpa’s achievements go beyond mountaineering records. He is also a solo paragliding pilot and has made three first ascents of previously unclimbed routes, demonstrating his versatility and pioneering spirit in mountain adventures.

Through his extraordinary accomplishments, Lakpa Dendi Sherpa has not only elevated himself but has brought recognition to the entire Sherpa community and to Nepal.
His journey from porter to world record holder stands as an inspiration to climbers worldwide and a powerful symbol of what can be achieved through perseverance, courage, and deep connection to the mountains.
