Kami Rita Sherpa: The Man Who Knows Everest Better Than Anyone
Kami Rita Sherpa once again proved that Sherpas have mountain blood and age is no matter. At 55 years old, this mountaineering legend has just reached the summit of Mount Everest for the 31st time, breaking his own world record once more.

Early in the morning at around 4 AM, under stable weather conditions, Kami Rita stood on top of the world’s highest mountain for the 31st time. He wasn’t climbing alone he was serving as the main guide for the Army Adventure Wing Everest Expedition, leading other climbers to fulfill their dreams of reaching the summit.
From Humble Beginnings to World Records
Kami Rita’s story begins in January 1970 in Thame, a small village in Nepal’s Solukhumbu District. This village is famous for producing great climbers, including the legendary Tenzing Norgay. Born into a big family living in a one room house, Kami Rita’s path to greatness wasn’t easy.
His father was one of the first Sherpa guides after Everest opened to foreign climbers. Mountaineering was in the family blood – his brother has also climbed Everest 17 times.
But young Kami Rita didn’t always dream of mountains. As a boy, he even thought about becoming a monk and spent time in a monastery.
However, life had different plans. To support his family, he chose the path of mountaineering. He started working on Everest at a young age, beginning as a porter and helping in base camp kitchens. It was hard work, but it taught him everything about the mountain.
The First Summit and Beyond
In 1994, at just 24 years old, Kami Rita reached the summit of Everest for the first time. That moment changed his life forever. Since then, he has climbed Everest nearly every year, sometimes even twice in a single season.
His dedication is remarkable. On May 22, 2024, he reached the summit for the 30th time, setting a world record. Now, with his 31st ascent, he continues to push the boundaries of what’s possible.
But Everest isn’t his only conquest. Kami Rita has also climbed other giants like Cho-Oyu, Lhotse, and K2. In total, he has summited peaks over 8,000 meters more than 40 times. Each climb represents years of preparation, risk, and unwavering determination.
More Than Just Records
For Kami Rita, climbing isn’t just about breaking records. In his own words from a Facebook post, he explains “These records mean a lot to me and my community. Each one has a story of hard work and struggle behind it. I didn’t have an easy childhood or much money, but my love for climbing kept me going.”
He continues,
“I’ve faced hunger, sweat, and doubt. New technology has made climbing a bit easier, but my passion is what really drives me. I don’t just climb for records – I could have set those long ago if that was my only goal. I climb because I love it and to make dreams come true for myself and others.”
Recognition from Fellow Climbers
Even accomplished climbers from around the world acknowledge Kami Rita’s incredible achievements. Kenton Cool, a British mountaineer who has climbed Mount Everest 19 times making him the individual with the most ascents of Mount Everest who is not a Sherpa or from Nepal has nothing but respect for Kami Rita.
Cool openly admits
“No one can compete with Sherpas. I don’t think I’m gonna catch Kami Rita. Kami Rita is not stopping anytime soon – he’s gonna hit 35-36.”
This acknowledgment from one of the world’s most experienced non-Sherpa climbers shows just how extraordinary Kami Rita’s achievements truly are.
A Voice for His People
Kami Rita works with Seven Summit Treks and collaborates with various brands, but he’s more than just a climber. He’s respected for speaking out about the risks Sherpas face and the need for better support for his community. He understands that Sherpas are the backbone of Everest expeditions, yet they often don’t get the recognition they deserve.
His success brings pride not just to himself, but to Nepal and the entire Sherpa community worldwide. He has become a global symbol of Everest itself.
Family and Future
Despite his incredible achievements, Kami Rita remains grounded. His wife wishes he would retire, but he says he will keep climbing as long as his body allows. His motivation comes from his love for his family, his people, and his country.
At 55, when most people are thinking about slowing down, Kami Rita is still reaching new heights. With the summit season closing on May 29, people are wondering if we might see his 32nd Everest ascent.
A Legacy of Courage
Kami Rita Sherpa’s story is one of courage, hard work, and dedication. From a small village boy who once considered becoming a monk to a world record holder who has conquered the world’s highest peak 31 times, his journey shows that with passion and determination, anything is possible.

As he puts it best “Remember, success isn’t just about records. It’s about loving what you do and giving it your all.”
His 31st summit proves once again that when you have mountain blood flowing through your veins and passion in your heart, age truly is just a number.
Kami Rita Sherpa continues to inspire climbers around the world, showing that the mountains are not just about reaching the top, but about the journey, the community, and the dreams we help make come true along the way.
