Sherpas, an ethnic group residing in the Himalayan region of Nepal, have a unique tradition of naming their children after the day of the week on which they were born.
This practice is based on the belief that the day of birth determines the child’s protector deity, with each day being associated with a specific deity that closely resembles the planets used to name days in Greco-Roman.or Indian traditions.
This custom is not as prevalent in Tibet as it is in the Everest region, but it is still practiced among Sherpas. Other factors, such as prefixes and virtue names, also contribute to the child’s name, reflecting the rich cultural heritage of the Sherpa community.
This naming tradition is just one aspect of the Sherpa culture, which is deeply intertwined with their religious beliefs and festivals. The Sherpa calendar is based on the lunar cycle, and many of their festivals are celebrated on the full moon of specific months.
