The Alpine Club of Pakistan has confirmed that the body of Sohail Sakhi, the Pakistani climber and guide who was lost in the Broad Peak avalanche, has been recovered.
A team of local volunteers from Shigar, who had been searching the area on their own initiative, discovered unidentified remains that were later confirmed to be those of Sohail Sakhi.
The body was first spotted by Muhammad Nadeem, Muhammad Bashir, and Abuzar, all from Tissar, Shigar. They alerted others in the area and, together with Zaman, their leader and cook, and several other volunteers, carried Sohail’s body down from Camp I to Base Camp.
The Alpine Club said the names of the other volunteers involved will be shared later.
Weather permitting, Sohail Sakhi’s body is expected to be transported by helicopter today.
After days of uncertainty, his family finally has confirmation and, most importantly, Sohail can now begin his journey home.
