Peaks and Progress: Lhakpa Sonam Sherpa’s Vision for Nepal

Lhakpa Sonam Sherpa’s life is a tale of adventure, perseverance, and giving back to his community. Born in 1961 in Namche Bazaar, a small town in Nepal’s mountains, Lhakpa grew up surrounded by the world’s highest peaks.

Lhakpa Sonam Sherpa is notably recognized as the first Nepali climber to complete the “Real Seven Summits,” which includes the highest peaks on each continent.

He has also climbed Mount Annapurna-I (1985), Mount Dhaulagiri (1986), Mount Thamserku (1987) in Nepal. It was after ascending Mount Thamserku he decided to establish a company named after the mountain.

But Lhakpa’s story isn’t just about climbing mountains. In his early twenties, he faced a huge challenge when he got very sick with meningitis. This illness left him almost completely deaf. Many people might have given up their dreams after such a setback, but not Lhakpa. He kept pushing forward, refusing to let his hearing loss stop him.

In 1980’s started Sherpa Mail Service with friend RK Sherpa for the people to ease the mail delivery from Kathmandu to remote Khumbu.

In 1980’s His efforts include organizing environmental clean-up campaigns and establishing the Namche Youth Club to engage local youth in community service.

When Lhakpa Sonam first started collecting old Sherpa artifacts in the 1980s, many in the community thought he was “crazy” because they saw the items as worthless junk. The villagers did not initially appreciate the importance of preserving these artifacts

Later, He founded the Sherpa Culture Museum and the Everest Documentation Center, which aim to educate visitors about Sherpa heritage and the history of mountaineering in the Himalayas.

He is widely regarded as one of Nepal’s most successful and influential tourism entrepreneurs. Over the years, his organization has received numerous awards and experienced significant growth. It has been 30 years since the passing of his late wife, Pasang Lhamu Sherpa, the first Nepali woman to summit Mt. Everest. Tragically, she lost her life during the descent.

Lhakpa Sonam has made substantial contributions to the tourism industry in Nepal. He is the founder and chairman of Thamserku Trekking and serves as the executive chairman of Yeti Airlines and Yeti Mountain Home, which operate deluxe lodges in the Everest region. His businesses have played a important role in promoting tourism and creating jobs in the region.

Lhakpa Sonam Sherpa’s autobiography, titled “Himbu,” was released on February 25, 2024, and marks a significant milestone in his life and career.
