Historic Family Achievement on Makalu

In a remarkable display of family unity and strength, five Sherpa siblings from Sankhuwasabha have achieved an extraordinary milestone by scaling Makalu (8,485 m), the world’s fifth-highest mountain. The successful ascent took place on May 9, 2025, at around 8:00 AM, as confirmed by Pemba Sherpa, Chairman of 8K Expeditions.

What makes this achievement so special is that all five siblings climbed the towering peak together, setting a new record. They are now recognized as the first family with the most siblings—five—to reach the summit of a higher 8,000-meter peak together.

The siblings who made history on Makalu are:
  1. Ang Dawa Sherpa
  2. Muktu Lakpa Sherpa
  3. Ngima Dorchi Sherpa
  4. Pasang Yangji Sherpa
  5. Pechhumbe Sherpa

This is not the first time the Sherpa siblings have achieved something remarkable. The Guinness Book of Records previously recognized their ascent of K2, the world’s second-highest peak.

Four Nepali Sherpa siblings have garnered global recognition for their historic ascent of K2.

On July 27, 2023, four of the siblings—Muktu, Ang Dawa, Ngima Dorchi, and Pechhumbe—scaled K2 as part of the SST K2 expedition, led by expedition director Chhang Dawa Sherpa.

Their recent achievement on Makalu stands as a shining example of their strong spirit, bravery, and the proud legacy of the Sherpa community. It is a moment of pride for their family and an inspiration for mountaineers everywhere.
