Beyond the Boundaries: Hari Budha Magar Everest Ascent

Hari Budha Magar’s story, which began in a small cow hut in a remote village in western Nepal 2,700 meters above sea level, personifies the spirit of resilience, perseverance, and unchangeable courage.

Ever since his early childhood, Hari has been fascinated by the breathtaking Mount Everest, which is the highest mountain in both Nepal and the world. Raised in the chaotic aftermath of the Nepalese Civil War, Hari faced many challenges and uncertainties. But when he jumped at the chance of serving in the prestigious Royal Gurkha Rifles, where he bravely served for 15 years, fate smiled upon him.

Tragically, Hari lost both of his legs above the knee in 2010 while serving in Afghanistan as a result of a homemade explosive device. Following the incident, Hari had to go on a difficult road of mental and physical recovery. Hari struggled with thoughts of despair and despair in a world where disabilities are frequently associated with stigma and discrimination. Still, he set off on an incredible journey of empowerment and self-discovery with unwavering will.

Challenges didn’t stop Hari from being a leader; his achievements broke prejudices and motivated countless people. He became the first paraplegic who had both legs amputated above the knee to reach the top of a mountain over 6,000 meters, the first to paddle a boat around the Isle of Wight, and the first to walk to the base of Everest.

Hari’s journey was not without its obstacles. In 2018, he faced the Nepalese government’s ban on double amputees climbing in the country. Undeterred, Hari joined forces with fellow climbers and disability organizations, advocating tirelessly for inclusivity and equal opportunities. Their efforts bore fruit, leading to the historic overturning of the ban.

Now, Hari stands on the precipice of history, poised to undertake his most audacious feat conquered Mount Everest. With a team of dedicated Sherpas and a spirit undaunted by adversity, Hari ascend the world’s highest peak, rewriting the narrative of what is achievable for people with disabilities.
