How Silvia Azdreeva Put Bulgaria on the Mountaineering Map
Silvia Azdreeva has done something no Bulgarian woman had ever done before. In July 2023, she climbed K2, the world’s second-highest mountain at 8,611 meters.

This dangerous peak in the Himalayas had only been climbed by two Bulgarian men before her.
This wasn’t her first big achievement. In 2022, Azdreeva became the first Bulgarian woman to reach the top of Lhotse, the fourth-highest mountain in the world.
Even more impressive, she climbed Lhotse just 27 hours after reaching the summit of Mount Everest, the world’s highest peak. She was the second Bulgarian woman ever to climb Everest.

Azdreeva’s journey to becoming a top mountaineer is unusual. She started as someone who simply enjoyed hiking. Without any experience climbing tall mountains, she decided to try climbing Ama Dablam in the Himalayas.
This bold choice marked the beginning of her remarkable climbing career.
Her climbs haven’t been easy. During her K2 expedition, she faced several avalanches and witnessed the death of another climber. These experiences highlight the extreme dangers of high-altitude mountaineering.
Azdreeva’s achievements have earned her recognition at the highest levels. The Prime Minister of Nepal personally gave her an award for climbing Mount Everest.
She is now the first Bulgarian woman to have climbed three mountains over 8,000 meters: Everest, Lhotse, and K2.
She has written a book called “To Conquer Yourself” that tells her story. Readers have described it as “captivating insanity” that makes other mountain climbing books “sound sane.” Her story is full of determination, physical struggles, and emotional challenges.

Through her climbing achievements, Silvia Azdreeva has inspired a new generation of climbers, especially women.
She has set new standards for Bulgarian mountaineering and shown that with enough determination, barriers can be broken.
