The HIMALI Story: Powered by Tendi Sherpa’s Vision

Tendi Sherpa’s journey began in a remote Nepali village, where opportunities seemed as distant as the peaks that would later define his life. At just 13 years old, he started working as a porter, carrying heavy gear for trekking clients across challenging mountain terrain.

During one of his first treks, a transformative moment occurred when a client taught him to write his name in the snow. With childlike enthusiasm, Tendi wrote his name repeatedly, catching the attention of other trekking groups and symbolizing his insatiable desire to learn and grow.

What set Tendi apart was not just his physical endurance, but his extraordinary capacity for learning. While many would have been content with their current circumstances, Tendi saw every interaction as an opportunity for growth. He learned to communicate in 18 different languages, becoming fluent in three, which allowed him to connect with climbers from around the world.

Working with various expedition companies, Tendi developed what he calls “mountain sense” – an intuitive understanding of mountainous environments that goes beyond technical skill. This wasn’t just about climbing; it was about reading the mountains, understanding their moods, and respecting their unpredictable nature.

His dedication and skill led him to become an IFMGA certified guide – a qualification he likens to obtaining a “doctorate in mountain guiding.” This certification meant he could guide climbers on any mountain in the world, a testament to his exceptional abilities and comprehensive mountain knowledge.

Tendi’s most remarkable achievement is his 17 successful summits of Mount Everest. Each climb was not just a physical challenge but a journey of personal transformation. From a young porter who could barely write his name to a legendary mountaineer.

The Turning point in Tendi’s journey came when he met Dave Schaeffer at the base of Aconcagua in Argentina. Their friendship, born from mutual respect and shared passion for mountains, would soon transform into a powerful business partnership – HIMALI

HIMALI was more than just an outdoor gear company. It was a mission-driven brand that sought to give back to the Nepali community. Tendi envisioned an “International Friendship Brand” that would leverage diverse experiences to create something truly meaningful.

The company’s core mission became twofold; to create premium mountaineering apparel and to contribute to local charities focusing on education and clean water initiatives in Nepal. By dedicating 5% of net proceeds to these causes, HIMALI became a vehicle for social change.

Today, HIMALI boasts a pro team of renowned mountaineers, including Tendi himself, Mingma G Sherpa, David Roseke, and many other accomplished climbers. Each team member brings unique experiences and perspectives.

Tendi Sherpa’s story is a powerful reminder that limitations are often just perceptions. From a young porter who learned to write his name in snow to a multiple Everest summiteer and successful entrepreneur.

Through HIMALI, Tendi has not only created high-quality mountaineering gear but has also created a platform to support education and community development in Nepal.
